Long Philip Burn Sediment Ponds
Following the devastating 2003 and 2004 flood events, investigations into
the causes of the flooding identified that the large amounts of sediments
which accumulate beneath the stone arch bridges at Philiphaugh were a principal
cause of flood risk. In partnership with Halcrow, Scottish Borders Council
took forward a proposal to construct sedimenation ponds at Ravensheugh which
would trap much of the cobbles and boulders as they are carried downstream,
preventing them from settling out beneath the bridges. Construction was
completed in October 2009.
