Long Philip Burn Flooding
The Long Philip Burn rises to the west of Selkirk on the south facing slopes
of the Three Brethren and descends nearly 300m over a distance of around
6km before joing the Ettrick Water at the Bannerfield estate. The Long Philip
Burn responds very quickly to "flash flood" events, where the
combination of high intensity rain over a small area and steep, rocky ground
creates the conditions for very sudden and difficult to forecast floods.
Such conditions caused the serious flooding to Bannerfield in May 2003 as
